abdkNew Delhi, Tuesday, May 17 – In a match held a day ago between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the guest defeated the host thanks to superb run chase, which is not easy when pressure is high.

Royal Challengers Bangalore, the team lead by Virat Kohli, won the toss and opt to bowl first against KKR, who went with the Playing XI that included wicket keeper Robin Uthappa, Gautam Gambhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Andre Russell, Piyush Chawla, Sunil Narine, Ankit Rajpoot, Morne Morkel, Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hasan. Those in extras for yesterday’s contest were Colin Munro, Sheldon Jackson, Rajagopal Sathish, Jaydev Unadkat, Chris Lynn,Manan Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Jason Holder, Shaun Tait, Brad Hogg and Kuldeep Yadav.

The combination of batsmen, bowlers and all-rounders in Royal Challengers Bangalore squad made it look strong despite the fact that stress of performing with excellence was huge on the shoulders of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli – the captain, AB de Villiers, Sachin Baby, Iqbal Abdulla, Stuart Binny, Chris Jordan, Sreenath Aravind, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shane Watson and Lokesh Rahul. On the other hand, the players who sat on bench were David Wiese, Vikramjeet Malik, Abu Nechim, Kane Richardson, Kedar Jadhav, Harshal Patel, Mandeep Singh, Vikas Tokas, Travis Head, Akshay Karnewar, Sarfaraz Khan, Praveen Dubey, Tabraiz Shamsi, Parvez Rasool and Varun Aaron. KKR looked forward to make best use of home condition that was required to shine and emerge as a victor in the end. They did so even in front of home crowd, who turned up in huge numbers to cheer for favorite team.

Given that the platform of Indian Premier League gives both dynamic players an opportunity to outshine amid others in different aspects during scheduled matches, it was necessary to put considerable total on the scoreboard while batting first against the team, which is a set of some great cricketers who can change entire outcome of the contest with mesmerizing performances. The start wasn’t good enough as Robin Uthappa, the opener, was dismissed by I Abdulla at a score of 2. It was the innings of KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir and Manish Pandey who made the team hope for some good runs after 20 overs. The 34-year-old left-handed opening batsman was run out by joint efforts of Watson and I Abdulla. 51 runs were pocketed by him in 34 deliveries that comprised seven boundaries too.

Manish Pandey stayed on the crease for a while and scored 50 runs off 35 balls, together with five 4s and  a couple of sixes. Aravind dismissed him the moment de Villiers, as usual, took a brilliant cath. Yusuf Pathan’s wicket to Chahal was a big success since the batsman being capable of pulling off in tough conditions. 6 runs were scored by him in 12 balls. Suryakumar Yadav dismissal by Aravind at 5 runs (4 x 1) added to pressure to a certain extent as before two dismissals in a short span of time, Gambhir-led squad was on the way to put considerable runs on the board. But Shakib Al Hasan, who was not out at 18 runs off 11 balls, together with a six and four, and Andre Russell, who was unbeaten at 39 runs off 19 balls, were in mood to keep the momentum up.

Russell fell on the crease once while making an attempt to place the ball into the gaps. This made RCB have a sigh of relief knowing the fact that the right-handed batsman houses potential to give bowlers a taste of their own medicine by hitting biggies out of the blue. And the same happened. On the very next ball, he hit a six. His innings consisted of a couple of fours and three sixes. 205.26 was Russell’s strike rate that was highest among all in the match on Monday. The all-rounder made full use of energy performed in a way that was required to keep the group on track.

When 183 runs were attained in 20 overs, inclusive of five extra runs given by RCB bowlers, confidence of Kolkata Knight Riders was back once again as this total was enough to feel having the grip in the game. In the mandatory powerplay, 51 runs were scored by team KKR. Royal Challengers Bangalore innings was interesting enough right from the beginning as Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli – the run machine – were able to do what was expected from them to shift tension on the host.  Narine gave his team a breakthrough by sending the opener Gayle back to the dressing room when he was one run away from pocketing a fifty. But eyes can’t be closed to the fact that his knock comprised five boundaries and four massive sixes that went far. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, was not out at 75 runs that came in 51 balls, together with five fours and three sixes. AB de Villiers was not out at 59 runs off 31 balls (4 x 5 and 6 x 3). The batting duo for another time made opponents feel the heat. KKR were defeated by 9 wickets at the hands of RCB.

Just three extras were bowled by bowling lineup of Kolkata Knight Riders. This shows that they tried not to miss line and length but the ball came so easily on the bat of RCB batsmen that KKR weren’t left with any other option but to see the victory slip away from their hands. The win was crucial in more ways than one as it keeps the hope alive for Royal Challengers Bangalore. If truth to be told then de Villiers and Kohli are able to create a specific place of their own in the hearts of audience thanks to awesome display of cricket in the ongoing IPL. Now, a lot can change on the points table if the team continues to win in the remaining matches. Had KKR been able to log victory in the match played a day ago, they would have been the table-toppers. Now RCB have come at no. 5 spot. Delhi Daredevils have been replaced by them. Audience is excited to note which four teams will contest during semi-finals in the end. They are ready to support favorite players and squads as motto is to see them nearing towards their goal, which is to be the winner of this year’s IPL.
