Virat Kohli Plays ‘Virat’ Innings again to Keep RCB Hopes Alive for Play-offs

virat2New Delhi, Thursday, May 19 – At M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru Royal Challengers on Wednesday, May 18, only a few would have thought of Virat Kohli hitting another ton but everyone was taken by surprise with the way the 27-year-old Delhi boy performed and led him team in a perfect manner right from the beginning.

Royal Challengers Bangalore Playing XI had Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Shane Watson, wicket keeper Lokesh Rahul, Sachin Baby, Stuart Binny, Chris Jordan, Varun Aaron, Sreenath Aravind and Yuzvendra Chahal. The players on bench for yesterday’s match were David Wiese, Vikramjeet Malik, Abu Nechim, Kane Richardson, Kedar Jadhav, Harshal Patel, Mandeep Singh, Vikas Tokas, Travis Head, Akshay Karnewar, Sarfaraz Khan, Praveen Dubey, Tabraiz Shamsi, Parvez Rasool and Iqbal Abdulla.

Kings XI Punjab squad included Hashim Amla, Murali Vijay, wicket keeper Wriddhiman Saha, David Miller, Farhaan Behardien, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Kyle Abbott, Axar Patel, Mohit Sharma, Sandeep Sharma and KC Cariappa. Those who watched their team failing to chase the massive target set by RCB were Rishi Dhawan, Pardeep Sahu, Marcus Stoinis, Swapnil Singh, Shardul Thakur, Nikhil Naik, Mitchell Johnson, Armaan Jaffer, Manan Vohra and Anureet Singh.

In the den of Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings XI Punjab skipper won the toss and decided to field first. However, hardly he had any idea that KXIP are nowhere going to stop RCB at a total that can be chased in rain-curtailed match where each team had to play for 15-15 overs. The contest started a bit late since showers hit the city just before the game. A score of 200 looks much more in 20 overs but it was put by the men in red shirts while accepting the invitation to bat first, giving no chance to the opponents to imagine even about getting close to it. The openers Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli displayed some great cricket and entertained fans to the highest level possible. When Axar dismissed Gayle, already 147 runs were on the board. 73 runs were scored in 32 balls, together with four boundaries and 8 sixes by 36-year-old RCB opener Gayle, who is rightly called the most powerful batsmen in limited-overs cricket.

Virat Kohli continued his outstanding show once again and played a captain’s innings in true sense. He played a knock of 113 runs that were attained in just 50 balls, including 12 4s and 8 sixes. AB de Villiers, though on the other hand, was dismissed by Kyle Abbott for a duck. Sandeep Sharma showed Kohli a way back to the dressing room but not as early as required to keep KXIP in the game. Lokesh Rahul – the wicket keeper was not out at a score of 16 that came in 6 balls, including three boundaries. Shane Watson was not out at 1 run. Eight extra runs were bowled by bowling lineup of Kings XI Punjab that consisted of Sandeep Sharma, Mohit Sharma, Kyle Abbott, KC Cariappa and Axar Patel.

Despite the fact that Murali Vijay hit a couple of fours when RCB fielders misfield to collected tha ball on time, it looked clear to many that the guest will not make it as chasing the humongous total in 90 deliveries wasn’t an easy task at all. But a classy six from him gave a clear hint that he was keen to guide his team as it was required to stay in the game. But he was highly disappointed when the ball hit the stumps in Aravind’s over post getting an inside edge. 16 runs were pocketed by the KXIP skipper and opener. From this point onwards, wickets started to fall. Hashim Amla was dismissed by Aravind post pocketing nine runs off 6 balls (6 x 1). Wriddhiman Saha was trying his best to not let pressure from building but was given legs before wickets in Chahal’s over when scored 24 runs off 10 balls, together with five fours. David Miller, who houses the potential to do better by sending the ball into the fences, succumbed to Watson. Three runs were his total contribution in the team’s total score.

Gurkeerat Singh Mann hit a couple of fours and scored 18 runs off 18 balls. Nonetheless the pressure to score in speed made him threw his wicket to Chahal. Axar Patel exhibited once again that he could bat. Regardless of the truth that he struck a six and four to get 13 runs prior being dismissed by Watson, the innings was small. Farhaan Behardien’s catch was pouched by de Villiers on a naught. Kyle Abbott was out at the same score when Chahal was on fire. Mohit Sharma was run out by Watson & Sachin Baby post pocketing 14 runs off 12 balls, including two boundaries.  Cariappa was not out at 12 runs (6 x 1) and Sandeep Sharma at 5 runs. By the end of 14 overs, Kings XI Punjab accumulated 120 runs. Rain started once again and the play can’t be resumed further. This handed RCB a win of 82 runs according to D/L method that is still keeping their hopes alive for the next round.

Kings XI Punjab, on the other hand, are on last rank. Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Rising Pune Supergiants are one place above them. Victory of RCB has raised worries for Delhi Daredevils, who are ranking at 6th spot. Royal Challengers Bangalore have now jumped at 2nd spot with 14 points, similar to Gujarat Lions, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. However, second rank is due to better net run rate than the opponents. Sunrisers Hyderabad are at no. 1 position in the league stages at present with 16 points and NRR of +0.400. Kolkata Knight Riders are at no. 3 on the points table. Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions are ranking at no. four and five respectively. A lot changed on the points table after yesterday’s match after Kings XI Punjab did not succeed in stopping RCB from logging another win, which is adequate to signify what all can be achieved him players like Gayle, Kohli etc. are determined to introduce massive difference through solid performance on the field.

Kohli was awarded ‘man of the match’ for his unbelievable 4th ton in the shortest format and this year’s IPL. If his team manages to qualify for play-offs, it would be like a dream come true for them. Credit is certainly given to the entire team that played positively and managed to rank up thanks to memorable wins on the opponents in the recent past. In today’s match, Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders are to meet each other. This contest is to definitely do some changes in rank once again. Teams are gearing up to put best foot forward, while audience are already up to back favorite players and side.
