pakNew Delhi, Thursday, September 8 – England lost the only T20 match at the hands of Pakistan at Old Trafford in Manchester a day ago. Pak won the game by nine wickets, taking the margin of victory vastly up this time. Pakistan tour of England turned interesting for the guests after they were thrashed by rivals in ODI series. First four matches were won by the hosts but the tourists managed to end it by winning last match by four wickets on Sunday.

The home team comprised Alex Hales, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan – the captain, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan and David Willey. Those to sit on bench were Sam Billings, Mark Wood and Tymal Mills. On the other hand, Pakistani squad included Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Khalid Latif, Sharjeel Khan, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed – the wicket-keeper skipper, Imad Wasim, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali. At the same time, Amad Butt and Mohammad Nawaz were in extras.

Since an only T20 match was scheduled between England and Pakistan, it was a do or die match for both sides. The hosts needed to rise above all challenges to win the series and avoid a defeat. But nothing happened what England players thought. England won the toss and decided to bat first. Pakistan when got invitation to bowl were clear in mind to stop England at a low score. It was their success that the home team were restricted by Pakistan at a score of 135 runs, a total that was put on the scoreboard to let opponents sniff a possible victory.

In T20 International match, it is never easy to defend a small score and same happened with the hosts. Pakistan team was looking forward to be well under the captaincy of Ahmed as guidance in right direction is imperative. Jason Roy and Alex Hales gave England a good start. Roy played an innings of 21runs in 20 balls, with a couple of fours and a six, while Hales scored 37 runs in 26 balls, together with five 4s. Both lost their wicket to Imad Wasim. This was when England batting began to collapse and did not see any stability.

Joe Root lost his wicket to Hasan Ali at a score of 6. Jos Buttler – the England wicket-keeper – was dismissed by Riaz at 16 runs (4 x 2). Some relief was likely to be introduced by Eoin Morgan but Riaz showed him the way back to dressing room while he was playing at a total score of 14. Pressure was such on him that he could not find a gap to place the ball. Ben Stokes had to go back early post missing to judge a delivery by Hasan Ali when playing at 4 runs.  David Willey scored 12 runs off 12 balls, together with a four before losing wicket to Riaz. Moeen Ali was not out at 13 runs, while Liam Plunkett at a zero.

Pakistan wanted to get past the modest total by the rivals and they did it surprisingly with so much ease. Wasim and Ali got two wickets in pocket. Riaz dismissed three batsmen. Tanvir and Amir did not get any wicket. Sharjeel Khan was the first and only man to throw his wicket to Adil Rashid but post doing his bit. The opening batsman scored 59 runs in 36 balls, including seven boundaries and three sixes. When Rashid gave first breakthrough, Pakistan were only 29 runs away from attaining the target. Khalid Latif was not out at a score of 59 in 42 balls, together with eight 4s and two sixes. Babar Azam was not out at 15 runs in 11 balls, with the help of two 4s.

The way three top-order batsmen batted, it did not let pressure build anytime on Pakistan. Timely struck shots helped Pakistan get near to target in a short span of time. 139 runs were scored by Pakistan in 14.5 overs. England skipper tried seven bowling options but except Rashid nobody else got any wicket. David Willey, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Moeen Ali strove for wickets, which were needed to keep the competitors under stress. Wahab Riaz was declared Man of the Match. Pakistan got something to be on a happy side by the end of the tournament post winning T20 series against England, who were in splendid form during 50-50 over matches.
